How athletes are selected

The same formula has been used for over 35 years in selecting the All-City award winners. This process begins with the nomination forms we send to each coach in the Oklahoma City metro area. Also included with those forms is a page where coaches can nominate players from other teams that they believe are worthy of All-City consideration. We collect them and begin to weigh the achievements of the nominated players.

In many cases, we call coaches to further discuss the merits of their players and players they coached against to give us more information about everyone we’re considering for our All-City teams. From there, we do our best to make the most informed decisions possible to select the players for the All-City teams.

There is no additional nomination process for All-City athletes. Athletes selected for The Oklahoman’s All-City teams will automatically be eligible to attend the event. There will be a nomination form sent to schools for our Scholar-Athlete award.

Featuring Keynote Speaker
VENUS WILLIAMS
International Tennis Superstar

Venus Williams

Currently, Venus holds 43 WTA Tour titles, which includes 7 singles Grand Slams. In July of 2008, Venus won her fifth Wimbledon Championship in a riveting match against her sister Serena Williams. Venus now joins the ranks of only a handful of legendary women’s singles tennis champions who have won 5 or more Wimbledon Championships.

In true champion form, Venus has been known to break records; during the 2007 French Open she made history with a record-breaking serve of 129 mph, and she tied this record during the 2008 Wimbledon tournament, making this the fastest serve ever recorded in women’s tennis history.

In 2005, after an intense 2 hour 45 minute match against Lindsay Davenport, Venus took home her third Wimbledon Championship. This match was to go down in history as the longest women’s final in Wimbledon’s 128-year history. This victory further validated her excellence and in November of 2005, Glamour magazine named her one of their Women of The Year.

Venus Williams will join us in honoring OKC Metro’s premier high school athletes at The Oklahoman’s All-City Prep Sports Awards.

Help Us Today, Make Better
Oklahomans For Tomorrow.

This year’s event will benefit Fields & Futures, a local non-profit created in 2012 to support Oklahoma City Public Schools in an effort to grow student participation in sports, believing if they play, they stay and if they stay, they graduate. By rebuilding and maintaining the district’s 44 athletic fields, Fields & Futures is helping level the playing field for Oklahoma City students by improving access and creating new opportunities to join a team and benefit from that experience.

If they play, they stay and if they stay, they graduate.
